What these strips test — and what they do not
These are not urine drug screens. A strip is used to check a substance — a liquid, a powder or a pill — for the presence of fentanyl or xylazine before it is used. Every other page in this section screens a person’s specimen; this page screens a sample of material.
Fentanyl and xylazine are the two most consequential adulterants in the current supply, and xylazine does not respond to naloxone — which is why programs increasingly check for both.
Choosing between the two drug strips
Each drug strip checks for one substance. The fentanyl strip checks for fentanyl and the xylazine strip checks for xylazine. A program concerned about both runs both, on separate strips. The cut off levels for each strip are printed on its flyer, so read them there rather than assuming the two match.

Who orders test strips versus a urine screen
These two strips answer a different question from every other page in this section: not whether a person tested positive, but whether a specific substance contains fentanyl or xylazine before anyone uses it. Harm reduction programs, correctional intake, and public health agencies order them for exactly that check, separate from any urine-based screening program running alongside it.

Before you reorder
