A 12 panel drug test checks one urine sample for 12 drugs or drug groups at the same time. Employers, staffing agencies, clinics and treatment centers use it when a 5 or 10 panel screen doesn't cover enough.

Here is the part most guides skip: not every 12 panel drug test checks the same 12 drugs. Med Supply Lab carries 18 different 12 panel tests. Only 8 drugs are on all of them. The other 4 slots change from test to test. So before you order, read the drug list on the product, not just the panel count.

The short answer

A 12 panel drug test checks one urine sample for 12 drugs or drug groups at the same time. Across the 18 tests we carry, these 8 are on every one:

THC marijuana COC cocaine AMP amphetamine BAR barbiturates BZO benzodiazepines MTD methadone OXY oxycodone PCP phencyclidine

The other 4 slots change from test to test. Read the drug list on the product, not just the panel count.

What is a 12 panel drug test?

It is a rapid screen. You collect urine in a cup, or dip a test card into a urine sample, and read the result in about 5 minutes. Each drug has its own strip, and the strip's code (THC, COC, OXY and so on) tells you which drug it checks.

A rapid screen gives a preliminary result. A positive is normally confirmed by a lab before any decision is made.

1. CollectOne urine sample in a cup or collection cup.
2. Wait about 5 minutesEach drug strip develops on its own.
3. Confirm positivesA positive is normally confirmed by a lab.

What drugs are tested in a 12 panel drug screen comes down to your program. If you need buprenorphine, pick a test with BUP. If you need TCA, there are 5 to choose from. If you don't know, start with your written testing policy, then match the codes.

Will gabapentin show up on a 12 panel drug test?

No. None of our 12 panel tests includes gabapentin, and it isn't part of most standard urine drug screens. When a lab needs to find gabapentin, it runs a separate lab test such as mass spectrometry.

Does a 12 panel drug test test for alcohol?

Not ours. None of the 18 includes alcohol. To check for alcohol, we carry saliva alcohol test strips separately.

Cup or dip card?

Our 12 panel tests come in two formats:

  • Urine cups (T-Cup and C-Cup): results are read on the closed cup, with no dipping step. Sold by the case of 100 tests.
  • Dip cards (T-Dip): you dip the card into a urine sample in a collection cup. The lowest cost per test. Sold by the box of 25.

Three to start with:

Some cups also have 3 adulterant strips: creatinine, specific gravity and pH. They check whether the urine sample was diluted or changed.

Who can use these tests?

Every 12 panel test on our page today is CLIA-waived. Waived tests are simple tests with a low risk of a wrong result, so they can be run at sites that hold a CLIA Certificate of Waiver, not only in a full lab.

Two things to know:

Some states have their own rules for workplace drug testing. Check your state's rules before you start.
DOT testing is different. Drug tests for DOT-regulated jobs, such as commercial drivers, must be done at an HHS-certified lab. A rapid cup is not the DOT test.
